Maritime Emissions Portal | RightShip Help Center

New release of the Maritime Emissions Portal

smallest contributors to emissionsMEP embedded in the RightShip platform

As a port or terminal, we know you’re facing increased stakeholder pressure to strengthen environmental measures, protect and preserve marine ecosystems and safeguard coastal communities’ health and wellbeing. To do this effectively, you need to be able to measure and manage emissions and air quality in and around your port.

At RightShip, we believe you cannot manage what you cannot measure.

That’s why we’ve launched a ports and terminals emissions tracker as the first building block in our ESG solution for the sector. This tracker - known as the Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP) - will help you develop clean air action and decarbonisation strategies over the next twenty years and beyond.

It’s made up of the following components:

  • Dashboard: Measures and reports on 14 emission types from all ocean-going and support vessels in your port.

  • Insights: Enables you to understand the root causes of pollution in your port.

  • Year-over-Year Comparison: Allows you to benchmark and track the progress of emission reduction targets in your port.

  • Emission Targets: An admin panel to set short- and long-term emissions targets for your port.

MEP is accessible from the side navigation menu of the RightShip platform. The product is customised with your logo and other informative content about your port.

Port Area

The MEP home page shows a map of the port area, highlighting:

  • Port Study Area: A ‘geofenced’ port area shows where vessel-sourced emissions are measured.

Points of Interest: Locations of berths, terminals, anchorages, etc. are identified by the port as points of interest.

Vessel Statistics

The Vessel Statistics section of the Dashboard displays the total number of vessel calls, distinct vessel count, and total tugboat jobs during a specified time period.

To view the complete list of vessels, just click on the View Vessels link in the top right corner.

Vessel Distribution

Clicking on the bar chart icon next to each entry in the Vessel Statistics section opens a details view.

For instance, clicking on the bar chart icon for Vessel Calls shows the distribution of these calls across vessel types.

Total Emissions

The Total Emissions section of the Dashboard shows the total volume of emissions in tonnes per emission type.

A traffic light colour code (red, amber, green) is used to assess the actual emissions against the emission targets set by the port for the specified time period.

Clicking on an emission type updates the entire dashboard to provide more detailed analysis on that emission type in the port.

Top Contributors to Emissions

The Top Contributors to Emissions chart on the Dashboard gives an insight into the five vessels with most emissions over the specified date range.

Emissions by Month

The Emissions by Month chart on the Dashboard shows the monthly distribution of emissions during the specified date range.

Emissions by Point of Interest

Heatmaps are used to show emission hotspots by Point of Interest on the Dashboard, making it easy to identify and drill down on a problem.

Alternatively, you can view the breakdown of emissions by Point of Interest in a heatmap matrix where you can also drill down on a problem with a single click.

Emissions by Vessel Type

The Emissions by Vessel Type chart on the Dashboard shows the contribution of each vessel type to emissions at the port, making it easy to identify and clarify an issue.

Emissions by Operation Mode

The Emissions by Operation Mode chart on the Dashboard shows the distribution of emissions across a vessel’s four operation modes.

Insights

Top Contributors to Emissions

The Insights page shows a list of top five contributors to emissions in the port.

To understand the factors that may contribute to the total emissions by a vessel, MEP highlights the following data points for each vessel in the list:

  • GHG rating

  • Total port activity

Total operating time

Smallest Contributors to Emissions

A similar list is provided to highlight the five smallest contributors to emissions at the port.

Vessel Emissions – Actual vs. Target

The Vessel Emissions chart on the Insights page highlights the number/percentage of vessels that:

  • Met the emissions target set by the port for the specified period (green)

  • Exceeded the target by an acceptable margin (amber)

  • Exceeded the target by an unacceptable margin – putting it into the high emissions range (red)

Correlation analysis

The Correlation chart on the Insights page shows whether emissions are proportional to port activity and operational time for a given vessel type, and it highlights any anomalies.

Meeting emission targets by month

The Emissions by Month chart on the Insights page shows, month by month, the actual emissions vs. the target emissions set by the port for the specified reporting period.

Long-term Forecast

The Long-term Forecast chart on the Insights page keeps you on track by visualising your performance against your short-term and long-term targets and the decarbonisation trajectory.

Year-over-Year Comparison

Setting up baseline and comparison years

The Year-over-Year Comparison page allows you to benchmark and track the progress of emission reduction targets in your port.

At the top of the page, you can specify the baseline year and up to three comparison years.

You can only view this page when emissions data for more than one year is available.

year over year

Vessel Statistics – year over year

The Vessel Statistics section highlights the year-over-year change in vessel calls, distinct vessel count, and tugboat jobs at the port for the selected years.

Emissions – year over year

The Emissions chart highlights the year-over-year change in emissions for the selected years, broken down by month.

Emission Targets

Configure emission types for your port

MEP is configured by default to measure and report on six emission types: CO2, NOx, SOx, PM2.5, PM10, VOCs.

Click on the ‘Add a new emission type’ button on the Emission Targets page to add up to eight additional emission types to the list.

Configuring emission targets for a reporting period

On the Emission Targets page, you can define emission targets for each reporting period that your port has data for.

These targets are used in the Dashboard and Insights to determine if emission levels are acceptable (green), marginally high (amber) or high (red). If no target is set, then a neutral grey is used.

  1. Select the reporting period for which you want to set emission targets.

    define target
  2. For each emission type, you can define the emission target (in kg/hour), Targets can be set at a vessel type level, or at a more granular DWT level.

    target CO2
  3. Based on the target settings entered, the red/amber/green colour code guide is followed when showing emission results on the Dashboard and Insights pages:

Absolute and relative targets

Emission targets can be set in two ways:

  1. Absolute: Enables you to set targets manually and freely for each emission type at a vessel type or DWT granularity level.

  2. Relative: You specify the % improvement desired over a baseline year, and the system automatically sets the targets for the specified year.

Report Generation

Print Report

A ‘Print Report’ function is accessible at the top right corner of the following pages:

  • Port Home

  • Dashboard

  • Insights

  • Terminology

print report

The Print Report screen shows the name and a preview of all charts available for printing, and you have the option to select the subset to print.

The final report is a PDF document branded for your port. Every chart is on a separate page with a landscape orientation.

Print Options

Pressing the Print button in the Print Report screen brings up your browser’s print dialogue. The ‘background graphics’ option must be selected for the chart to be displayed properly in the generated report and the layout print option must be set to ‘landscape’.
